We live in Galveston and like so many others here, our
home, our business, and our church were all flooded with
several feet of water during Hurricane Ike. We are
self-employed, my husband is a carpenter and his shop
including all his tools and his truck were lost as well
as everything in our home. Having no home to live in
and no way to provide, we found ourselves overwhelmed at
the magnitude of the losses in our lives and in the
lives of everyone around us. And yet there was so much
to do. One of the first situations we were faced with
was the danger of fire in our home due to all of our
electrical wiring, outlets and breaker panels being
submerged in water. The main breaker was corroded from
the salt water and we were unable to turn it off. We
could not find an electrician as all in the area were
either flooded or so overwhelmed with needs that it
would be weeks before they could get to us. At one
point we drove around trying to find a power truck to
get someone to come help us, to no avail. Galveston
looked like a war zone, resources were gone and we
simply did not know where to turn or what to do. When
we were at one of our lowest points, we were told about
the I-TEC guys who were coming to town. They would be
there the next day and they would come and help us.
There are no words to describe the renewed sense of hope
this gave to our weary souls. Tom and the other
volunteers came and replaced the panels in our home and
in our shop and they did it with a beautiful smile and a
loving spirit. In the week following the storm the men
from I-TEC had set temporary generator power to our
church, our volunteer dormitory buildings and my home.
They set up the temporary shower facility with hot water
and lights and even cleared and cleaned the street and
pressure washed the sidewalks. What a gift from God
that these men with their many talents came to share our
burden and walk with us as we start down the long road
to recovery. Many of us are asking, what would we have
done if they didn't come to help?
We praise God for sending us a lifeline called I-TEC.
We are all eternally grateful.
